Domestic Worker Dies After She Was Allegedly Forced to Sleep Outside With Dog

An Indonesian domestic helper died after she was allegedly abused and was forced to sleep outside for a month.

Neighbors then claimed that she had been forced to sleep on the cat porch for more than a month.

The employer's daughter denied the accusations that the house helper was abused.

An Indonesian domestic worker in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia died after her employer allegedly abused and forced her to sleep outside with the dog for a month. Tenaganita, a group dedicated to protecting migrants from abuse, said that the house helper named Adelina was rescued by the police on Saturday, February 10, as per the report of a journalist. She was immediately brought to Bukit Mertajam Hospital, but she passed away later on.

Tenaganita volunteer Sally Alexander told the Malay Mail:

“There is going to be a post mortem. We’ll determine the cause of death. She was very fearful to say what had happened to her. We were hoping that in time, she would be able to open up. But she was very scared and very fearful and very reluctant to talk.”

Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim’s office got hold of Tenaganita to ask for help with Adelina’s case. The Democratic Action Party (DAP) then probed at her employer’s home after informants tipped that Adeline had wounds on her arms and face due to alleged abuse. The employer’s daughter, however, denied this allegation.

“She reiterated that they did not mistreat the maid, but she admitted that she had previously slapped the maid at least once or twice.”

Moreover, the employer claimed that Adelina had been sleeping on the cat porch for a month but their neighbors said it had been more than a month. There was also one instance that the maid clogged the kitchen drainage, so the employer had to buy a strong chemical to decongest the hole. However, Adelina allegedly accidentally poured chemical on her legs and arms which caused her burns.

“The maid accidentally spilt the chemical on her own legs and arms, and caused a chemical burn. The employer’s daughter said that they bought iodine and medicine for the maid to apply on her wound. She also claimed that the maid did not stop agitating her wound and caused the wound to worsen.”

On Facebook, Mr. Sim shared the last moments of Alelina.

“Tenaganita volunteers were with her when she lost consciousness at the hospital just now before she passed away. It was the final glimpse of humanity we can at least show to her.”
