Carrying Out the Lethal Injection

A 77-year-old Florida man was put to death on Tuesday. The state executed Curtis Wilkie Beasley for a deadly attack decades ago. He became the 16th person executed this year in the busy death chamber. Officials pronounced Beasley dead at 6:12 pm following a lethal injection. The procedure took place at Florida State Prison near Starke. A jury convicted him of first-degree murder, robbery, and grand theft auto. He killed Carolyn Monfort with a hammer at her home in 1995. Beasley was strapped to a gurney when the chamber curtain opened.

A spiritual adviser remained seated at his feet throughout the entire execution. The warden asked if he wished to make a final public statement. "I want to apologize for all the mistakes I made," Beasley said. The execution began immediately after he finished speaking to the room. The Florida Supreme Court recently rejected arguments regarding his cognitive decline. They ruled executing a man his age did not equal cruel and unusual punishment. The US Supreme Court also declined to intervene in the case on Tuesday. Beasley is Florida’s seventh prisoner over 70 executed this year.

The History of the Crime

He was the 29th person executed across the United States this year. Court records show Beasley had been staying at Monfort’s home during the incident. He was pressure washing and painting nearby apartments owned by her son-in-law. Monfort's daughter found her body in a blood-splattered laundry room later. Authorities arrested Beasley while he worked under a false name in Alabama. Florida has conducted more than half of all US executions this year.
