Suspicious blaze destroys halal butcher in Sydney

Police are investigating after a halal butcher was destroyed by fire in the suburb of Arncliffe, in Sydney’s south, overnight.

Emergency services were called to the Wollongong Road store about 3.30am to find it ablaze.

Witnesses told 9NEWS they heard an explosion “like a bomb going off” shortly before the business was engulfed in flames.

 

About 20 people residing in apartments above the store had to be evacuated.

There were no injuries, but the store has been extensively damaged.

“All lost, everything lost. I don’t know what has happened,” the owner told 9NEWS.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious and investigations are ongoing.
