The report by the California Highway Patrol states that 18-year-old Obdulia Sanchez lost control of her 2003 Buick, overcorrected, and drove off the edge of the road; killing her younger sister, Jacqueline Sanchez Estrada, on July 21st. The car had crashed into a barbed-wire fence and flipped over into a field.
Nicandro Sanchez, the grieving father, gave a statement after the car accident that was live-streamed in a horrific Instagram video, posted by 18-year-old Sanchez. He said, “What I think is she knows she's done something wrong, because she knows, and that's what I feel. She feels bad for herself, but she killed her own sister."
Officials reported that the 14-year-old Sanchez and another teen girl, sitting in the back seat were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the car due to the impact.
Moments after the accident, Obdulia Sanchez, made a hysterical video about the accident and started to live-stream it on Instagram. "Hey, everybody, if I go to f-- jail for life, you already know why," she said while adjusting the camera to show her younger sister, lying motionless and bleeding from the head. She continued, “My sister is f-- dying. Look, I f-- love my sister to death. I don't give a f-. Man, we about to die. This is the last thing I wanted to happen to us, but it just did. Jacqueline, please wake up."
Another girl started to scream in the background. "I don't f-- care though," Sanchez declares. "I'm a hold it down. I love you, rest in peace, sweetie. If you don't survive, baby, I am so f-- sorry. I did not mean to kill you, sweetie. Sweetie, I am f-- sorry. Sweetie, please wake up!"
Jacqueline was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Allegedly, Jacqueline was in the back seat of the vehicle and the seat belt was removed, and while the vehicle was rolling over, it ejected her, and the impact ended up killing her.
Nicandro Sanchez and his wife Gloria had seen the video, and called the crash an "accident." Obdulia Sanchez spent time in Merced County Jail on Monday, and was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and disturbing vehicular manslaughter.
Authorities have not identified the other girl; she had major trauma to her right leg but is expected to survive.
GoFundMe page reported that Jacqueline Sanchez was supposed to celebrate her quinceanera on Sunday. The page set up to help cover the dead teen's funeral expenses.
According to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Darin Heredia, officials were "well aware" of the video. They are in the process of understanding whether it's a legitimate video, and whether using the phone while driving is what caused the crash.
Such videos prove that people share gruesome content using live-streaming tools provided by companies such as Facebook, and Instagram, and these companies are failing to control the content shared by users. The Post had also reported in April about the same issue, "live video of violent incidents, including suicides, beheadings and torture, have gone viral, with some reaching millions of people." However, the Wall Street Journal reported in May that Facebook is taking the steps to cut down on violent and sensitive video content, by employing more people to review the content shared.
