Just A Day After Her Daughter Dies, Woman Receives Pre-Booked Mother’s Day Cake

For this family in a quiet locality of Muzaffarnagar district, a cake delivered on Mother’s Day was like a wound that ran too deep for the healing. Two days after their daughter’s death, a local bakery delivered a cake at their house on Sunday, one that she had pre-booked for her mother. Rubina, 24, an MSc student at a local college, died of a stroke on Friday.

Like every year, she had booked a cake for her mother who “she loved more than anything else in the world” from a bakery near her house on Thursday. But fate had a different plan. While the family was mourning her death, the delivery man appeared at their doorstep with the cake in his hand. Rubina’s mother has been inconsolable ever since.

“Rubina had lost consciousness around 15 days ago. She did not have any previous history of illness. Doctors were unable to diagnose the cause and she recovered. But on Friday, she suddenly collapsed never to wake up again. The cake has only made things unbearable for all of us,” said Zameer Ahmed, Rubina’s father, who runs a small hotel in the district.

Rubina is the survived by five siblings - four sisters and a brother. Her mother, Mahmuda Khatim, said, “She was the most loving of my six children. She loved celebrating birthdays and other occasions. Two cakes used to arrive for me every year - one on my birthday and another on Mother’s Day. Her death has left a deep scar on our hearts. Even after death, she had celebrated the event for me.”

Ankush Kumar, who works at the bakery and had delivered the cake, said, “I tried calling on Rubina’s number to get the cake delivered. When the calls went unanswered, I decided to deliver it anyway. The moment I told the family who had ordered the cake, her mother began to cry profusely. I have no words to express how I felt.”
