12 die, several injured in Islamabad after van crashes

The driver fell asleep on the wheel before crashing into a toll gate

At least 12 people have died and six others are critically injured after a passenger van crashed in Islamabad, Pakistan on Monday.

The speeding vehicle carrying 18 passengers crashed into Islamabad Toll Plaza before catching fire, Pakistani local media reported.

The Islamabad-bound van was coming from Sargodha, a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

A motorway police spokesperson said that nine people died on the spot while three others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, according to The Express Tribune.

The spokesperson also explained that the fire started after the van’s fuel tank exploded.

 

Driver dozed off

The representative also said that CCTV footage indicated that the driver fell asleep on the wheel and rammed into the payment booth soon after.

Many expressed their grief over the accident online.

Twitter user @iSiyarAliShah shared the CCTV footage of the crash and wrote: “Death toll rises to 12 in the road accident in #Islamabad. This was moments before the speeding van rammed into Islamabad toll plaza. Who’s responsible for the lives lost in this tragedic incident.”
