On Thursday, the Government of Bhutan refuted claims made by Chinese foreign ministry. A Chinese diplomat Wang Wenli made claims that Bhutan conveyed to Beijing via diplomatic channels that the trilateral border stand-off area in Doklam doesn’t belong to Bhutan.
As a response to developments in Doklam, Bhutan issued a press release on 29th June stating that the road construction inside Bhutan territory is a violation of agreements between the two nations. According to the press release, the Chinese Army is constructing a road extension from Doklam to the Bhutan Army camp at Zompelri.
Reportedly, both the countries had a written agreements of 1988 and 1998 stating that they would maintain peace in their borders till the impending final settlement on the boundary is made. Agreements were also made on maintaining status quo on the boundary as before March 1959 that expects them to stay clear of taking unilateral actions, or use force to change the status quo.
So clearly Bhutan expected China to maintain the status quo in the Doklam area till 16 June 2017. India has expressed concerns about China’s road construction as a representative of serious security threat to New Delhi. India has expressed these concerns to China clearly in the recent times.
