In This MP Village, Rich Men Can Rent A Wife On A Monthly Or Yearly Basis For A Few Thousands

Women empowerment cannot be narrowed down to their ability to work, their capacity to buy things and their education. If we ever draw a rough graph on precisely how a woman should be treated as opposed to the opposite gender, we need to put some apples in both the baskets - not more, not less.

So while all of us busy getting our girls educated, cherishing the way they have landed jobs, lauding their decision to marry or not marry and harping about how many of them have created a fortune for themselves without a man helping them, there are bunch of these women, from the same coterie, who are being sold off.

In this Madhya Pradesh village where rich men cannot get themselves married or fail to find a partner, they just rent a woman on the monthly or yearly basis for prices as low as a few thousand.
These men who do not have a wife or a partner simply sign on stamp papers worth Rs 10 and the deal is locked. Once this contract ends, the man has an option to renew it or move on. This practice happens in Shivpuri, a district located in the central Indian, in the Gwalior Division of northwest Madhya Pradesh.

But it isn't MP where we have caught this happening. In 2006, a man in Gujarat sold his wife to a rich businessman for a monthly rental of Rs 8000.

So maybe these tales of women empowerment and upliftment of women in our country were nothing more than a charade.
