Karan Johar has announced a release date for his upcoming historical espionage film. The untitled movie explores the life of Indian spymaster Rameshwar Nath Kao. Dharma Productions and Leo Media Collective confirmed an August 11, 2028 release. This date aligns with the Independence Day weekend in India. It also targets the 60th anniversary of the Research and Analysis Wing.

The film adapts journalist Nitin Gokhale's 2019 biography of the spymaster. The narrative covers the crucial historical period from 1955 to 1971. It details the initial formation of India's dedicated external intelligence agency. The storyline includes the agency's first major operation during the 1971 war. The producers describe the project as a large-scale espionage action film.

Exploring The Origins Of The Research And Analysis Wing

Johar first announced the ambitious adaptation back in January 2020. The project experienced a quiet development period over the following years. Leo Media Collective spent the past two years researching and dramatizing the narrative. Johar wants the film to pay respectful homage to R&AW and its founders. Kao was born in Benares in 1918 and joined the Indian Imperial Police.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru later selected him to build a separate intelligence capability. India's defeat in the 1962 war exposed serious gaps in its intelligence network. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi officially created R&AW in 1968, appointing Kao as chief. He led the agency for nine years, building its structure from the ground up. Kao was known for his closeness and rapport with Indira Gandhi.

The film joins Dharma's recent run of military and national history projects. The studio previously produced successful films like Raazi and Shershaah. Audiences eagerly await casting announcements for the lead role.
