A 23-year-old man from Kerala, who went missing last year and was suspected to have joined the Islamic State, may have died in an airstrike in Afghanistan.
According to police, the deceased’s relatives received a message from one Ashfaq in Afghanistan, informing the family of his death. Police are still trying to verify the claims.
Police on Tuesday said his father received the message on an app two days ago informing him about the death of Marwan Ismail, who hailed from Thrikkaripur, in an undisclosed location in Afghanistan. The message didn’t bear any information on the place of death or what happened to the body.
According to a PTI report, Marwan was working as a physiotherapist in the Middle East before joining ISIS last year.
Ismail and Ashfaq were among the 21 Kerala youths who went missing and was reported to have joined the IS in Syria in 2016.
In April, Yahya, a native of Palakkad, was allegedly killed in a similar airstrike in Afghanistan.
