Myanmar and Bangladesh Agree To Cooperate In Rehoming Rohingya Refugees

The talks come as there is increasing pressure on Myanmar to rectify the issue at the earliest.

Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed to work together on the repatriation of Rohingya refugees and also put the framework in place to boost border security. The relations between the countries have reached the breaking point after a surge of refugees into Bangladesh.

More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar since Aug.25. Rohingya attacks were met with a furious military response by the Myanmar army which has since been termed as ethnic cleansing by the United Nations.

Myanmar;s home affairs minister Lieutenant General Kyaw Swe and Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan attended a meeting in Myanmar’s capital. The two leaders signed agreements which take into consideration border cooperation and security.

The two countries agreed to stop the fleeing of Myanmar residents into Bangladesh. Mostafa Kamal Uddin, secretary from Bangladeshi home affairs ministry said that the two countries have reached an amicable agreement to facilitate different steps to ensure the safe passage of Rohingyas back to their homeland.

Tin Myint echoed his counterparts views and said that they would try and restore normalcy in Rakhine to make sure the refugees can return from Bangladesh to Myanmar.
There was a protest on Sunday in Rakhine to send out a message to the Myanmar government to not repatriate Rohingyas.
