Coronavirus LIVE updates: Global cases pass 5 million after biggest daily rise in infections

The global coronavirus case count has passed the five million mark after the largest daily increase in infections.

The WHO yesterday recorded the biggest daily increase in cases so far in the pandemic, with 106,000 new infections.

Latin America has become the new epicentre of the outbreak, with the largest portion of new daily cases.

Brazil yesterday announced 888 new deaths and nearly 20,000 new infections, increasing pressure on the country's President Jair Bolsonaro.

It comes after Prime minister Boris Johnson set a 10-day target to deliver a coronavirus test and trace system so the lockdown can be further eased across the country.

Scenes of crowded beaches and parks led to fears people were giving up on social distancing guidelines as they take advantage of lockdown rule changes allowing them to drive wherever they want.
