Unlike bacteria, which are living organisms, viruses live within people as they need a host in order to thrive. There isn’t any antibiotic capable of killing a virus, as antibiotics work on bacterial infections only.

Luckily, our immune system can protect us from various viruses, as long as supported by antiviral herbs.  Here are some of the best antiviral herbs capable of boosting our immune system:

 

1. Garlic

Garlic has been long used as treatment for various diseases. It has been scientifically shown that garlic extract is effective against the common cold and flu.  To prevent yourself from getting sick, take 2.5 grams of garlic extract a day. Garlic oil, on the other hand, is used to treat cardiovascular disease and ear infections.

2. Ginger

Ginger has been long used in Eastern medicine, and for a very good reason.  It acts as potent antiviral and antibacterial agent which prevents viral infections by increasing body`s temperatures. In addition, it also helps the body get rid of toxic matter.

You can use ginger in three ways: 1) drink ginger tea; 2) combine ginger tea with honey and swallow it; 3) chew on a piece of ginger.

3. Oregano

While oregano itself is not an antiviral agent, the oil obtained from distillation of medicinal grade oregano is.  Oregano contains thymol and carvacrol, both of which posses potent anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.  Multiple studies have shown that oregano oil is extremely effective at fighting bacterial infections and viruses.

As an added bonus, oregano oil is quite versatile and it can be added to various meals, including sauces and soups.

4. Licorice Root

Licorice root, which is native to Asia and Europe,  is found in an extract and powder form and is typically taken for respiratory infection, cough, sore throat, and stomach issues.  Glycyrrhiza is the active ingredient in licorice root, while the specific type of licorice root which doesn’t contain this ingredient is called DGL.  It is also often used to treat acid reflux, canker sores, and ulcers.
