Hayden Panettiere’s Death Ruled Accidental as Police Close Investigation

Authorities in Greenville, South Carolina, have officially closed their investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, confirming that her passing was accidental. The 36-year-old actor died on August 16, 2026, after being found unresponsive at a residence. The latest decision follows months of inquiries into the circumstances surrounding her death. Medical examiners had previously determined that a combination of substances caused the fatal overdose. The police announcement brings the local investigation to a close, although separate federal inquiries have reportedly examined other aspects of the case.

Toxicology Report Identifies Multiple Substances

The coroner’s findings attributed Panettiere’s death to the toxic effects of several substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, while the other substances include prescription medications used for different medical purposes. The combined effects of these substances were identified as the cause of death. An autopsy found no traumatic injuries that contributed to her passing. Investigators had continued their work after the initial medical findings while examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigation Concludes After Months of Inquiries

Panettiere was discovered unresponsive at a property in Greenville, prompting an emergency response on the afternoon of August 16. Medical personnel attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her former partner, Brian Hickerson, and his brother were reportedly present at the residence. Police previously stated that preliminary findings did not indicate foul play. The department has now confirmed that its investigation is complete, based on the medical examiner’s determination and the evidence gathered during the inquiry.

Remembering the Actress and Her Personal Journey

Panettiere was widely recognised for her roles as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, earning two Golden Globe nominations for the latter performance. Her film credits also included the Scream franchise and Remember the Titans. In her later years, she spoke publicly about addiction, postpartum depression and recovery, sharing personal experiences in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in May 2026. She is survived by her daughter, Kaya. Her openness about difficult personal experiences brought attention to the challenges many people face while seeking recovery and support.
