Netflix’s new three-part documentary, The One About Matthew Perry, revisits the life and career of the late actor best known for playing Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom Friends. However, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer do not appear in new interviews for the series. Director Mary Robertson confirmed that the five actors were approached but chose not to participate, as they continue to grieve the loss of their longtime friend.
Director Says the Cast Is Still Grieving
Robertson explained that the decision came at a time when people close to Perry were still trying to understand his death and come to terms with life without him. The filmmaker acknowledged the close relationship between the actor and his former co-stars, suggesting that their absence should not be interpreted as a lack of affection. Instead, the documentary team respected their choice not to revisit painful memories publicly while dealing with their personal grief.
A Private Funeral Revealed Their Close Bond
Although the five actors declined to be interviewed, the documentary offers a glimpse into their friendship through the recollections of Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick. She describes a small funeral attended by close friends and family, where the five Friends co-stars arrived together. Their emotional appearance and shared farewell illustrated the bond they maintained with Perry beyond the television series that made them household names around the world.
Netflix Documentary Explores Perry’s Life and Struggles
The series looks beyond Perry’s fame to examine his experiences with addiction, his personal relationships and the circumstances surrounding his death at 54 in October 2023. It features interviews with family members, longtime friends and professional colleagues, alongside personal photographs and archival material. Rather than focusing solely on his struggles, the documentary also aims to celebrate his humour, his work and the impact he had on audiences through his memorable performances.
Matthew Perry’s Legacy Remains Central
The absence of the main Friends cast does not prevent the documentary from exploring Perry’s place in television history and the lives of those who knew him. Robertson has described the project as an honest portrait that acknowledges both his achievements and the difficulties he faced. The series also revisits Perry’s openness about addiction and his efforts to help others experiencing similar challenges, keeping his personal story and professional legacy at the heart of the film.
