Kuwait Fund Inaugurates Major Highway Infrastructure Project In Liberia

Connecting Rural Communities

The Kuwait Fund for Development achieved a major infrastructure milestone in West Africa recently. They participated in the massive inauguration of the Gbarnga–Salayea Road Project in Liberia. They also broke ground on the highly anticipated Salayea–Konia Road Project simultaneously. This highlights the Fund’s continuous efforts to support sustainable economic development globally. His Excellency the President of the Republic of Liberia attended the prestigious inauguration ceremony. Thamer Al-Failakawi, Director of Operations, proudly represented the Kuwait Fund at the event. The 81-kilometre Gbarnga–Salayea project aims to improve Liberia’s national road network significantly. It reduces travel time and transportation costs for thousands of rural citizens.

Supporting Economic Growth

The improved road enhances access to vital agricultural markets and essential public services. This supports the economic and social development of highly vulnerable communities along the route. The Kuwait Fund contributed a massive 5 million Kuwaiti dinars to finance the project. This loan equals approximately $16 million dollars, officially signed back in 2016. Several other major international development institutions co-financed the massive infrastructure project. The Saudi Fund for Development and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development participated actively. The President of Liberia described the road as a defining moment in the nation's renewal. He stated the investments create massive opportunities for farmers, traders, and local businesses.

A Long History Of Cooperation

Al-Failakawi reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to continuing its strong partnership with the government. The event included a groundbreaking ceremony for the 50-kilometre Salayea–Konia Road Project. The Kuwait Fund is contributing another 4 million Kuwaiti dinars to finance this second section. This extension strengthens connectivity between regions and supports massive international trade networks. The Kuwait Fund’s cooperation with the Republic of Liberia dates all the way back to 1978.
