5. SETI

Radio Telescopes VLASETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial intelligence, is an exploratory science that seeks evidence of life in the universe. Scientists of SETI believe that if given a suitable environment & sufficient time, life will develop on other planets also. At present SETI research is developing a signal processing technology to search for signals from advanced technological civilizations in our galaxy. But the question which arises in our mind here is could it be dangerous to try to advertise our presence to alien civilizations. I think the extreme distance between the earth & the possible other civilizations will reduce any real threat. For example, if we send a message to a star in the Orion constellation today it will take over thousand years to get there.

However if we think it carefully, the activity which is likely to be dangerous to humans is the receipt of a signal from alien civilizations rather than sending a message. Besides that finding evidence of other technological civilizations requires significant effort which SETI research officials are doing for years.
