Road toll gates to be activated after two years: Official

A senior official at the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT)   said recently that the toll gates will be operational only after the completion of all road projects.

In a comment to Al Sharq Arabic daily, GDT Director Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, said that the activation of electronic toll gates on the highways is almost two years away, after the completion of all parallel road projects.

He pointed out to the daily that the QGates fall under the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Any talks about charging a certain amount through the electronic gates on the roads are premature as of now, he told the Al Sharq.

"The Q-gates can be made operational when all parallel roads are ready for use," he said. "This new technology can be used on busy roads in order to ease congestion."

"The aim of these gates is to reduce traffic pressure, which will effectively alleviate congestion on roads like 22 February street,” he added.

It is expected that the toll will be collected through a rechargeable card displayed on the windscreen of the vehicle. Each time the vehicle passes the gate, the toll will be automatically deducted from the card.
