Thomas Cook evacuates Egypt Steigenberger Aqua Magic hotel guests after deaths of British couple

The five-star Steigenberger Aqua Magic hotel has 395 rooms – 294 family rooms and 15 suites – with a basic double room costing £178-a-night.

It is favourite with holidaymakers from the North East.

On TripAdvisor, the hotel was rated five out of five by tourist misselstacey from Newcastle who stayed at the hotel earlier this month and wrote: “Amazing, can’t wait to return! Had the best week ever, it was like pure luxury.

“Our hotel room was spotless every day and we were never without a drink in our hands even without us asking... We are hoping to return as soon as possible! Thankyou Steigenberger!”

Thomas Cook said it audited the hotel in late July 2018, when it scored 96%.

It would not reveal how many guests had been reported unwell at the hotel or details of their symptoms.

A spokesman said “investigations are ongoing” into the cause of the couple’s deaths and said it was not able to comment further.
