Employer Fires Filipina Domestic Helper in HK For Networking Business

The employment of a Filipino domestic helper in Hong Kong was terminated by her employer and she was sent home by the Immigration Department after she was discovered seeking recruits to join her multi-level marketing company.

“Nakita ng employer niya ang laptop niya na nag-rerecruit siya. Tinanggal siya sa trabaho tapos sinumbong siya sa Immigration Department,” Attache Hermogenes Cayabyab Jr. told Hong Kong News.

Cayabyab added that the employer told him they did not want to be involved should the helper run into trouble because of her networking recruitment activities. It was learned that the helper was already a member of the undisclosed networking company and continued her business after she arrived in Hong Kong.

After receiving the termination notice by her employer, the domestic worker, an unnamed Ilocano woman in her 40s, stayed in a shelter. But on October 10, after the Immigration Department concluded its probe on the woman’s possible breach of condition of her stay, ordered her removal and sent her back to the Philippines.

“Halos isang taon lang siya sa amo niya at iyon ang unang kontrata niya dito sa Hong Kong,” Cayabyab said.

A number of Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong are involved in the multilevel marketing business, openly peddle products and recruit members to be part of their team. Some of whom advertise their business on Facebook.

In February, a number of Filipino helpers filed a complaint against Emgoldex after investing in what was later found to be a bogus investment scheme which promised windfall of financial returns to its investors.
