UNESCO Adopts Sultan Haitham Cultural Heritage Prize

UNESCO officially launched the Sultan Haitham Prize today in Paris. This global award honors Oman for protecting our shared human history.

A Massive Collaborative Effort

Several Omani ministries and national commissions created this joint initiative together. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth led the massive planning phase. They coordinated directly with the Omani delegation to UNESCO. The prize perfectly matches global trends in protecting cultural traditions.

Sultan Haitham Drives Cultural Growth

The award deeply reflects the supreme cultural vision of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. He assumed leadership of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture back in 2002. His massive efforts helped Oman join the prominent 2003 UNESCO Convention.

He also spearheaded incredible national cultural projects across the Sultanate. He helped establish the National Museum and the National Archives. His vision continues to build beautiful cultural centers and libraries everywhere.

Rewarding Global Heritage Champions

The new prize targets passionate individuals, community groups, and universities. It rewards organizations that successfully protect and transmit intangible cultural heritage. This heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, and traditional craft skills.

Minister of Culture Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi praised the initiative. He stated the award builds a vital bridge between different peoples. The prize strongly promotes social cohesion, global equality, and lasting peace.

Supporting Sustainable Development Goals

This initiative actively supports the ambitious 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It champions quality education and builds strong, peaceful communities worldwide.

Candidates must demonstrate significant contributions to preserving cultural heritage. UNESCO will prepare the final technical conditions alongside Omani cultural officials.
