The works on many of the underground stations of the Doha Metro have begun after the recent completion of the tunnelling of the entire 53.25km distance, a senior Qatar Rail official said yesterday. The total distance of the Metro is a little over 111km. 
The Red Line North (11.30km), Red Line South (12.05km), Green Line (16.60km) and Gold Line (13.30km) are the four major underground alignments of the Doha Metro. This is apart from the nearly 38km of mainly underground light transit rail being developed in Lusail.
“The electro-mechanical works have commenced in many of the stations on the four lines have started,” revealed Qatar Rail managing director Abdulla Abdulazeez al-Subaie on the sidelines of the Qatar Transport Safety Forum.
Speaking earlier at the forum, Ministry of Transport and Communications’ Road Transport Planning Department director Rashid Taleb al-Nabet said both communications and transport were  among the sectors that contributed significantly to the development of the national economy.
The two sectors are the main backbones of the country’s economic, industrial and social developments, he said while recalling some of the major initiatives made under the stewardship of Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti.
Al-Nabet said the ministry is working round-the-clock to build an integrated transport system that would eventually contribute to making a quantum leap in the field of mobility and transportation of international standards in Qatar.

“The ongoing developments in the transport and  communications sector, supported by cutting edge technologies are therefore everyone to see. The developments in rail, roads, ports and airport have begun to unfold and each of them is built ensuring international safety standards,” said the official while reminding the gathering that the ministry has accorded top priority to highest safety standards.
The ministry, according to al-Nabet has achieved several safety-related accomplishments, which included the launch of the Qatar Traffic Control Manual and Qatar Highway Design Manual.
“The two manuals are among the contributions that enriched transport and traffic safety concepts with a commitment to enforcing the best worldwide criteria and practices in the sector, “ said the official. He also remembered the support extended for the success of the ministry’s programmes  by the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
