Google's music streaming ecosystem is a complicated mess, just like their messaging offerings. Firstly, there is Google Play Music, a subscription based music streaming service, similar to Apple Music and Spotify.
Then there is YouTube Red, which removes ads from Youtube videos and lets you save them offline. However, if you have a YouTube Red subscription, you will get access to Google Play Music for free. Additionally, existing Google Play Music subscribers will receive a free YouTube Red membership.
And finally, there is YouTube Music and YouTube TV. The first one is a free service and later is only available to limited regions across the globe.
And now Google is planning to merge Google Play Music with YouTube Red to create a new streaming service, reports The Verge . The report from The Verge was based on comments made Lyor Cohen, a senior executive at YouTube at the New Music Seminar conference in New York. Cohen stated that "the important thing is combining YouTube Red and Google Play Music, and having one offering."
It is not clear, whether both of the apps will be merged to create a new one, or Google will just launch another new music streaming service as a whole combining features from both YouTube Red and Google Play Music. Cohen added that the purpose of this merger is to help educate consumers and bring in new subscribers.
