Every now and then you hear of a new phone getting launched in the market. Upgrades in camera, processors, displays and what not.
As much as the customers try to give a fuck to these updates, there is one feature whose update has been the need of the hour ever since the inception of smartphones.
A long lasting battery.
No matter how much you spend on your phone, the battery always sucks. So much so that a new device called a power bank was invented just to solve this problem. But guess what, now we have two things to charge instead of one.
A typical case when the solution of a problem becomes the problem itself.
But we have a good news.
Researchers from the University of Central Florida (UCF) have devised a technique for creating flexible supercapacitors
This will not only store more energy than comparable devices, but can also be fully charged in seconds and continue to be recharged more than 30,000 times without affecting performance or capacity.
These Supercapacitors have the ability to release energy in large busts which enables them to power modern day devices in no time. The drawback is that they cannot store as much energy as the normal batteries. However, this new research is expected to change all of that.
A post-doctoral associate Nitin Choudhary shared,
“If they were to replace batteries with these supercapacitors, you could charge your mobile phone in a few seconds and you wouldn’t need to charge it again for more than a week.”
One more problem with the supercapacitors is the bulky size. However, these researchers have come up with a new way to attach 2D nanomaterials (called as transition-metal dichalcogenides) to supercapacitors thus reducing their size to a larger extent.
With a whopping 30,000 charge/discharge cycles, this new device is way more efficient than the existing prototypes. As of now, this device is not yet ready for commercialization. But the researchers at the facility have claimed that once this technology is brought to the market, smartphones and electric cars will be super-charged in no time.
