The Philippine government will soon lift a ban of hiring new Filipino domestic workers in the United Arab Emirates, which was imposed amid reports of abuse by employers.

Hjayceelyn M Quintana, the Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, said a delegation from the Department of Labor and Employment from the Philippines would arrive in the UAE next week to meet with officials, the Khaleej Times reported.

“After the meeting, we will be making an official announcement on the issue of lifting the ban on recruitment and employment of new Filipino domestic workers to the UAE,” Quitana said.

The ban was imposed in 2011 due to the bad behavior of recruiters and reports of domestic workers suffering abuse by their employers. The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment recommended a deployment ban be impost as the UAE failed to comply with the Republic Act 10022 or the Amended Migrant and Overseas Workers Act of 1995.

The law stipulates that the Philippines will allow the deployment of workers only if the host country has existing labor and social laws protecting the rights of workers.

In September last year, the Philippine and UAE governments signed a memorandum of understanding on mutual cooperation in the recruitment and employment of domestic workers. However, the Philippine government has not yet officially announced the lifting of the ban despite signing the new agreement.
