1. Power Plant IM, Charleroi, Belgium
This structure was built in 1921 and was used to the largest coal burning power plants in Belgium. The massive cooling tower shown in the picture could cool down 480,000 gallons of water per minute. However, the plant emitted 10 percent of the total carbon dioxide in the entire country and was shut down by Greenpeace in 2007.
2. The Maunsell Sea Forts, England
These giant metal towers in the Thames estuary were meant to protect England from German air raids during WWII. Interestingly, after being abandoned these forts were used by pirate radio operators. These forts were decommissioned in the 1950s.
3. Great Train Graveyard, Uyuni, Bolivia
In the early 19th century, Uyuni's transportation network was to be extended but the project was abandoned due to technicalities and friction with local indigenous people. Corroded over time by salty winds, the Great Train Graveyard is now a beautiful abandoned attraction for tourists.
