Side Effects of Papaya For Pregnant Women

Avoid papaya if you are taking medication to lose weight or planning a baby. Large amounts can also damage your esophagus. The papaya seeds can decrease fertility in males and induce menstrual periods or increase menstrual flow in women.

Whether you add it to your salad or mix it in a fresh glass of fruit juice, this rich fruit is a summer treat. If you are a papaya lover, you will be pleased to know that this delicious fruit is also known for its medicinal properties.

Side Effects of Papaya in Pregnant Women

Induce abortion

Papaya seeds, roots, and infusion of leaves can cause miscarriages. And immature papaya fruits have a high concentration of latex that can cause uterine contractions. As the fruit matures, the concentration of latex is significantly reduced. But even so, if you are pregnant it is best to avoid fruits.

Causes birth defects

Papain, a chemical found in leaves and fruits, can be toxic to your baby and cause birth defects if you take it while you are pregnant. Immature fruits have a higher concentration of papain than mature papayas, but it is safer to avoid papayas during pregnancy.

May damage the esophagus

Having large amounts of papaya orally can damage your esophagus, the food tube that connects your throat to your stomach. Although researchers do not seem to yet have a number, it is unlikely that normal portions of the fruit could cause this reaction. A cup of papaya (148 gr) can safely be included in your daily fruit quota.
