A 20-year-old pregnant woman committed suicide after her fiance refused to marry her. Heena Kouser was engaged three months back to Syed Nazeem.

The Byatarayanapura police had initially registered a case of unnatural death, but later changed it to abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code after Kouser’s mother told them that Nazeem’s refusal to the marriage had pushed Heena to suicide.

The police arrested Nazeem on Tuesday. Heena committed suicide by hanging on July 6 at her home in Mysore Garden when her parents, Ziyaulla and Parveen Taj, had gone out. Parveen Taj approached had approached the office of the city police commissioner on Saturday seeking action against Nazeem, 25, a flower decorator.

“Nazeem lives in the same neighbourhood as Kouser. He approached us requesting us to allow him to marry her. The two had got engaged three months back. The accused refused to marry her after impregnating her. Nazeem was the last person to call Kouser and the two had spoken for nearly seven minutes. Immediately after the call, she ended her life. We saw she had committed suicide when we returned home,” a family member said.

Kouser was staying at home and getting ready for her wedding, which was scheduled within the next few days. She was into the first trimester of her pregnancy.
“The accused has been arrested on Tuesday. He has been taken to police custody,” said an officer.

The Byatarayanapura police have also registered a case of intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace (IPC 506) and cheating (IPC417) against Nazeem.
