LeBron James Was Underpaid by $190 Million During His NBA Career, Analysis Finds

LeBron James’ Estimated Value Exceeds Career Earnings

NBA superstar LeBron James has earned approximately $584 million in player salaries across his 24-year career, but a new analysis estimates his on-court value at more than $774 million. The difference of around $190.4 million suggests that his performances have been worth considerably more than the money he received through contracts. The assessment considers his contributions in scoring, playmaking, rebounding and defence throughout his remarkable career.

James Ranks Among the NBA’s Most Underpaid Players

The analysis places James second on the list of the NBA’s most underpaid players, behind Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Although James has earned a place among basketball’s highest-paid athletes, the figures suggest his overall production has regularly exceeded his estimated salary value. His long career, consistent performances and ability to influence games have contributed to the gap between his earnings and projected on-court worth.

Philadelphia Contract Could Increase the Difference

James is set to play for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2026–27 season on a reported veteran-minimum deal worth approximately $3.9 million. That figure is significantly lower than the estimated $35.6 million value attributed to his previous season’s performance. If he continues producing at a comparable level, the difference between his salary and estimated value could exceed $30 million in the coming season. However, his responsibilities may change as he shares the court with teammates including Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

A Remarkable Career Across Four NBA Teams

James has represented the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers during his NBA career. A four-time NBA champion and four-time Most Valuable Player, he remains one of the sport’s most influential figures. The latest assessment highlights how his impact on the court can extend beyond his contractual earnings. While salary and estimated performance value are different measures, the figures underline the extraordinary contribution James has made to professional basketball over more than two decades.
