As Tom Cruise 'begins training for Top Gun sequel', here's what the rest of the cast - Iceman, Goose and Charlie - look like now

Tom Cruise was in training for the sequel to Top Gun at the weekend as he raced to a helicopter in the Home Counties wearing his trademark white T-shirt and aviator sunglasses.

The Hollywood star, who first played pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in 1986, looked every inch the dashing fighter pilot as he took off in the chopper.

The long-awaited sequel, to be called Top Gun: Maverick, is expected to be released in 2019.

Cruise has confirmed that the film is being made but refused to give any details about plot or cast.

“We're going to have the same tone that we had for the first movie,” he said last month.

“Stylistically, it's going to be the same. We're going to have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer.

“The aviators are back. We'll have the need for speed and big fast machines. It's going to be a competition film, like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein but a progression. There's going to be aircraft carriers and there's going to be jets. I'm very excited, it's a great challenge.”

While Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis have yet to be confirmed for the film, fans believe it would be impossible to make a sequel without the pair reprising their roles as Maverick's nemesis, Iceman, and flight instructor Charlotte Blackwood.
