New Award to Recognise Outstanding Achievements
Sharjah has introduced a new international award to recognise exceptional contributions in science, literature, arts and studies of notable personalities. His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, issued an Emiri Decree establishing the Harun Al-Rashid International Award. The award will be presented periodically and will operate with its own legal identity, financial independence and administrative structure. The initiative aims to celebrate achievements that make a meaningful contribution to knowledge, culture and society.
Four Main Categories Announced
The award will cover four major fields: sciences, literature, arts and studies of notable figures. The science category will recognise original research, discoveries and innovative applications in theoretical and applied sciences. Literature will include creative writing, criticism, language studies and contributions that enrich cultural understanding. The arts category will recognise work across visual, audio and performing arts, while the fourth category will focus on biographies, historical documentation and research about influential personalities from Arab and international backgrounds.
Promoting Research, Creativity and Cultural Exchange
The initiative aims to encourage scientific research, support literary and artistic creativity, and promote innovation across different areas of knowledge. It will also contribute to preserving cultural and scientific heritage by highlighting the achievements of influential figures throughout history. Another key objective is to strengthen intellectual exchange between cultures and encourage research that explores the contributions of Arab and non-Arab personalities. The award is also expected to highlight inspiring role models and emerging talent.
Board of Trustees to Oversee the Award
A Board of Trustees, chaired by the Ruler of Sharjah, will supervise the award and oversee its main policies and activities. Members will serve four-year terms, which may be renewed. The board will approve participation rules, evaluation criteria, judging panels, award schedules and the names of winners. It will also determine financial prizes and other benefits. A Secretary-General will manage the award’s executive affairs under the board’s supervision, helping ensure that its activities follow the objectives set out in the decree.
