The first time 90s kids saw this definition in action was during Jim Carrey’s The Mask (1994) when the titular character pulls a wedgie on an unsuspecting street thug. Of course, as a kid if you wanted to try this in real life, you realized that your underwear would have to have taken yoga lessons from Baba Ramdev.
Aditya Narayan, singer Udit Narayan’s son was probably referring to this act when he yelled, “Teri chaddi nahi uteri maine na, toh mera naam Aditya Narayan nahi,” to an airline official after an argument at Raipur airport.
In the video, Aditya is seen protesting an airline official’s allegations that the singer was using abusive language in public. Aditya responds by saying that he is free to say whatever he wants, and that he was having a private conversation with his friends. It is also hinted that the group was filming a video of some sort.
In defence of the airline official, if push had come to shove, his dignity would not really have been affected, because as MF Moonzajer had said, “Do not fear facing people without your pants; the world is dirtier than your underwear.” How true!
Who knows, there could have had an unexpected twist if Narayan had run into a smart Alec who would have promptly stripped down to his undies himself and said: “You will treat my underwear with the reverence it deserves. Next time, you will stop and appreciate - hell, you’ll marvel at the miracle of my ass clad in silk.” (Molly Harper, How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf).
Of course everyone is going ballistic over Narayan’s brattish behavior, but did you ever stop and think why he reacted the way he did? You only thought how many retweets and views you shall get while sharing his video on social media. How selfish. Well, the real reason behind his aggressiveness and irritation was again something that happened in the 90s and the blame is squarely on advertising.
For the ones arguing that any one of us can lose our cool and react like this, but Narayan is facing flak because he was caught on camera, is a celebrity and a famous singer’s son, consider this: That airline official could have been any one of us. When push comes to shove, what would you do? How would you react if you were in the same situation? Well, it’s always better to be prepared. And this is when you should listen to Jill Conner Browne, who said, “Always wear pretty underwear, on account of you just never know.”
In conclusion, Narayan turned out to be a really lucky guy. He won’t have been if he had run into Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia from Star Wars) - because it is rumoured that Fisher never wore underwear in Star Wars after George Lucas told her, “There is no underwear in outer space.”
