Have you ever noticed that men’s shirts have their buttons on the right side while women’s have them on the left? Is this the result of the designer’s whim or just another way to emphasize the difference between us?

As it turns out, this peculiarity of men’s and women’s shirts dates all the way back to when buttons were invented, around the 13th century.
Back then, only wealthy women could afford to have buttons on their shirts. They usually had maids who helped them dress every day. That’s why the buttons on women’s shirts were placed on the left side: to make it easier for maids to button it (assuming that most people were right-handed). Men usually tended to dress themselves, hence their buttons were placed on the right side.
