Police said the deceased was riding the cycle in an "unsafe manner".

A 31-year-old Asian man died after he was run over by a 4-wheel drive vehicle in Ras Al Khaimah on Friday. The driver of the 4WD failed to spot the cyclist on the road and could not stop in time to avoid running him over. He died on the spot.

The police said the deceased was riding the cycle in an "unsafe manner".

Brigadier Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, director of the Traffic and Patrols Department, said the police were notified about the crash around 7.45pm. "Initial enactment of the accident showed that it happened due to poor visibility. The motorist and the cyclist were also not paying attention while on the road."

He added that the cyclist was not in a designated area. "Cycles must not be driven on public roads and all precautionary measures must be strictly observed. A good quality helmet and reflective safety vest are very important life-saving tools for cyclists."
