Qatar no longer dependent on blockading countries: Baker

With almost two years since the blockade began in 2017, Qatar has enhanced its capabilities of doing things without depending on the blockading neighbouring countries.

Speaking at a press conference to unveil the largest programme for the summer season, ‘Summer in Qatar’, Secretary-General of Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) and GCEO of Qatar Airways Akbar al Baker said, “This is the largest investment that we are making during the summer season and we would like to assure you that it will be a very successful event by the grace of God. It is very important for us to show our neighbours that the blockade has actually enhanced Qatar’s capabilities to do things on its own without depending on them.”

He reiterated that this was the first time that they were doing a tourism promotion of this scale during summer.

Baker further said that in the past people from Qatar visited neigbouring countries, but the summer programme offers a wide array of activities for every segment of the society and they can spend their summer here.

“In the past people from Qatar went to the neighbouring countries and spent money. But this year, we want them to stay here and contribute to their own economy”, Baker remarked.

He said that with the summer festival, which runs from June 4 to August 16, they were targeting visitors from the friendly neighbouring countries that respect Qatar’s culture and the country itself.

Baker said that Qatar will never forget how the blockading countries deprived them of everything during Ramadan two years ago. “Even the children of my country will never forget the dark day in June, 2017.”

He also urged the foreign media to be fair and report facts and not fake news about Qatar.
