After pleading guilty to charges relating to drugs and breach of stay conditions, a Filipina was sentenced to jail by a Hong Kong court.
Magistrate Jason Wan sentenced Rosefina Tormento to 14 days in prison for “possession of equipment fit and intended for the smoking of dangerous drug”, and seven days for “breach of condition of stay – overstay.”
Tormento was arrested in North Point last August 24 with a device believed to be intended for inhaling shabu (methamphetamine), Hong Kong News reported. It was also discovered that her tourist visa expired 20 days earlier.
The defendant is married to a Hong Kong resident, but the case prosecutor argued that she failed to apply for change of her status from a tourist to a dependent visa before expiration of her tourist visa.
“I have given you the most lenient [sentence]. If you are caught with doing drugs again, you will be sent away for months. It could be 12 months,” Judge Wan told Tormento, who had been in custody for 26 days before the sentence was handed down.
