Representing Japan at the Asian Games requires balancing international sports with a demanding career. Kurumi Ota, a 39-year-old systems engineer, manages this challenging dual life. She works full-time at SOMPO, making time for training and tournaments difficult. Her employer allows her roughly two weeks off twice a year to compete. However, there was a period when even that limited time off was impossible.
Stepping Away From International Competition
Ota stepped away from cricket for seven years between 2017 and 2023. This extended break was not due to injury or poor athletic form. She joined one of Japan’s largest core-system modernization projects. This ten-year undertaking was valued at several billion dollars. The sheer scale of the project demanded her complete professional attention.
Cricket had to take a back seat until the new system was released. Ota has since returned to Japan’s national team with renewed energy. She is now part of the squad preparing for the upcoming Asian Games. She previously represented Japan at the 2014 Asian Games tournament. During that competition, her team was eliminated by China in the quarterfinals.
Growing The Sport Of Cricket Across Japan
Her story reflects the daily reality for many Japanese cricketers today. The women’s national squad includes players from clubs, universities, and overseas teams. Cricket still operates on a largely part-time basis throughout the country. There are currently only 14 official cricket clubs across all of Japan. This makes international tournaments an important opportunity to grow the sport locally.
Japan will face defending champions India in the upcoming quarterfinal match. India arrives at the tournament after recently winning the Women’s Asia Cup.
