Humanoid Robot Completes Household Work In Unseen Homes

A humanoid robot successfully completed household work across 30 unfamiliar homes recently. California-based robotics company Figure unveiled Helix 2.5, a new artificial neural network. This system allowed the robot to operate without collecting prior data in those properties. It did not require fine-tuning for the specific layouts, furniture, or objects inside. The robot was tested in 30 previously unseen homes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Navigating Complex Environments Without Prior Training

The homes were excluded from the model’s training process to ensure accurate testing. The company used a fixed version of the system for each task performed. The robot was assigned three long-horizon, whole-body household tasks during the trial runs. It tidied a living room by collecting scattered objects and putting them in a basket. It also folded towels and successfully made beds in unfamiliar bedrooms.

Figure said Helix 2.5 could navigate different layouts and handle unfamiliar furniture without intervention. The company described the work as zero-shot generalization for the robotics industry. This means the robot had not been trained using data from the specific test homes. Robots have performed impressive demonstrations in highly controlled settings for many years. However, a real home presents complex challenges with varied furniture and lighting conditions.

The Future Of Embodied Artificial Intelligence

For a home robot to be useful, it must do more than repeat a memorized task. It must recognize a new environment and adjust when the first attempt does not work. Figure said Helix 2.5 was pretrained using its proprietary dataset of human behavior. The reported results are company figures and have not yet been independently peer-reviewed. There is still a large gap between a successful test and a reliable consumer product.

A household product would need to operate safely around children, pets, and fragile items. It would require long battery life, robust privacy protections, and an affordable price. The robotics industry is investing billions to solve these complex engineering challenges. The long-promised household humanoid is starting to look less like science fiction today. Researchers continue to push the boundaries of what embodied AI can achieve.
