Dubai ruler makes surprise visit and finds empty government offices, fires senior officers next day

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Everyone thought it was an ordinary day in a government office in Dubai until the ruler walks in to do an unannounced check and find nobody at work.

Ross Logan mentioned in his article for the Mirror Co UK that Sheikh Mohammed visited several civil services offices on Sunday morning, which is a regular working day in Dubai, and was surprised to find out that several senior officers’ desks are all empty.

A video, which was originally taken by Khalifa Saeed and was shared by the government’s media office, shows the Sheik walking alone through a luxurious looking office without any employee around.

Probably surprised of what he discovered, the Sheikh nonchalantly picks up a book and begins flicking through it.

“Mohammed Bin Rashid on a field inspection tour in Dubai this morning,” the message in the video reads.

As a result of the surprise inspection, nine high-ranking officials have been ordered to retire by the Dubai ruler.

The officials include Abdul Qader Al Jasmi, director of legal affairs, deputy director general Eisa Al Maidoor and Mohammad Abdul Karim Julfar, assistant Director-General for corporate support.

The Sheikh starts his visits at 7.30am, something he is known to do from time to time, making the employees’ tardiness all the more disapproving.

An article by Gulf News said the Sheik thanked the new retirees for their efforts, and that the decision “reflects Sheikh Mohammad’s keenness to allow a new generation of young leaders to shoulder the responsibility of development in the next period”.

“He certainly wanted to send a message. Timeliness starts at the top and we won’t go after employees when their bosses aren’t there,” said Mona Al Merri, director-general of Dubai media office.
