Lawmakers are questioning the living conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The Trump administration has officially acknowledged a serious military issue. Eight US service members attempted suicide during an extended Middle East deployment. A US lawmaker revealed this information to the public on Wednesday. The incidents occurred aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao detailed the events in a formal letter. He was responding directly to questions from Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Reports of deteriorating living conditions and poor mental health recently made headlines. The carrier first deployed to sea last November.

The top civilian official confirmed there were no actual fatalities.

The letter stated eight attempts occurred across the entire strike group. Fortunately, there have been no completed suicides onboard during this specific deployment. The Navy provided additional details regarding the severe incidents. One sailor assigned to an air wing intentionally went overboard in August.

A search and rescue helicopter quickly recovered that specific individual. Medical staff then transferred him off the ship for follow-up psychiatric care. Another sailor attempted to go overboard earlier in March. His shipmates physically stopped him and ensured his immediate safety.

The extended deployment schedule places immense strain on the crew.

The Lincoln originally left California in November 2025 for routine duty. Commanders later rerouted the ship to the volatile Middle East region. It finally made a brief stopover in Thailand in early September. The crew spent an exhausting 286 continuous days at sea.

Military families raised the alarm about food shortages and poor hygiene. Defense officials previously insisted the media misrepresented the situation. The Navy is now facing intense public and political scrutiny.
