Australian Man Discovers Gold Nugget Worth Up to $160,000

An amateur gold prospector in Australia has made an extraordinary discovery after spotting a tiny yellow mark in the country’s remote outback. The nugget, found near Tibooburra in north-western New South Wales, is estimated to be worth between $150,000 and $160,000. The find came after several days of searching through the region’s red soil, where previous attempts had mostly produced scraps of metal and other discarded objects. The unexpected discovery has drawn attention to the rewards that can sometimes come from persistent gold prospecting.

A Faint Metal Detector Signal Reveals the Treasure

The unnamed prospector was searching at Mount Stuart Station when his metal detector picked up a signal that initially seemed unremarkable. As he dug deeper, the signal became much stronger, prompting him to continue removing the soil. During one of the first scrapes, he noticed a bright yellow spot in the hole. A video of the moment captures his surprise as he uncovers the sizeable nugget, turning an ordinary day of searching into an unforgettable experience.

‘Tibooburra Spud’ Weighs Nearly 1.2 Kilograms

Nicknamed the “Tibooburra Spud”, the unusual gold-and-quartz specimen weighs approximately 1.218 kilograms. Testing found that around 940 grams of the rock consists of gold. Its estimated market value stands between $150,000 and $160,000, although a collector could potentially pay as much as $200,000 for the rare piece. The finder reportedly intends to sell the nugget, with its unusual size and appearance potentially increasing its appeal among collectors.

Rare Find Highlights Growing Interest in Gold Prospecting

Experienced prospecting equipment seller Greg Spangler said discoveries weighing more than one kilogram are uncommon. However, rising interest in gold hunting has encouraged more people to explore the hobby. Prospecting can offer outdoor adventure and the possibility of finding valuable deposits, although major discoveries remain rare. For this Australian prospector, a faint signal and a small flash of yellow led to a remarkable find that demonstrates how patience and persistence can sometimes produce extraordinary results.
