Hurricane Polo Explodes Into A Dangerous Category 5 Storm

Rapid Intensification Off The Coast

Hurricane Polo just became a massive weather threat. It exploded into a terrifying Category 5 storm near Mexico. It is now one of the most powerful eastern Pacific hurricanes. The storm is drawing massive energy from warm ocean water.

The US National Hurricane Center released an urgent update. Polo reached maximum sustained winds of 180 mph on Tuesday. A NOAA aircraft measured an incredibly low central pressure. This proves the storm is extremely dangerous and powerful.

The Threat To Mexico

Polo will bring heavy rain and dangerous surf to Mexico. The storm is currently moving near the southwestern coast. Forecasters expect the hurricane to travel along the shoreline. Thankfully, the eye should remain just offshore for now.

The storm intensified rapidly within just 24 short hours. It jumped quickly from a tropical storm to a Category 5. Coastal areas could see up to six inches of rainfall. This heavy rain brings a severe risk of flash flooding.

Why Did Polo Grow So Fast?

This rapid growth happened because of perfect atmospheric conditions. The sea-surface temperatures are exceptionally warm right now. The storm also experienced very light vertical wind shear. This allowed the hurricane's circulation to become highly organized.

The deep reservoir of warm water fueled the storm. Powerful hurricanes normally churn up cooler water to weaken themselves. Polo did not experience this normal cooling effect.

Is El Niño Truly Responsible?

Many people blame the El Niño climate pattern. It is definitely a contributing factor right now. However, scientists say the situation is much more complicated. You cannot blame the storm entirely on El Niño.

The immediate causes are warm water and abundant moisture. Local wind conditions also played a massive role here. Authorities urge everyone in the area to stay highly alert.
