Can Trump Still Shape the Middle East After His Midterm Setback?

Midterm Defeat Raises Questions About Trump's Political Future

US President Donald Trump is facing fresh political challenges following the Republican Party's defeat in the November 2026 midterm elections. Democrats have gained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, creating obstacles for Trump's domestic agenda. The election results have also raised questions about his influence over international affairs, particularly in the Middle East. Public dissatisfaction over the Iran conflict and rising living costs contributed to the Republican setback. However, losing congressional support does not mean Trump has lost his presidential authority.

Iran Conflict Could Influence Future US Decisions

Iran is closely watching the political developments in Washington as the election results could influence future diplomatic negotiations. Tehran may see an opportunity to push for an agreement that could help reopen the Strait of Hormuz and stabilise energy markets. Trump has acknowledged that the Iran conflict played a role in the Republican losses. However, the US president still retains significant authority over foreign policy and military decisions. This means diplomatic progress and renewed tensions remain possible as both countries assess their next steps.

Gulf Countries and Israel Face New Uncertainty

Countries across the Gulf, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, are closely monitoring Washington's approach towards the region. These governments have supported diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and protect regional stability, energy infrastructure and international shipping. Israel also faces questions about the future of its relationship with the United States. Trump's announcement regarding changes to annual American assistance after 2026 has added another dimension to the discussion. Greater Democratic influence in Congress could also bring increased scrutiny of US support for regional policies.

Trump Retains Presidential Powers Until 2029

Despite the election setback, Trump remains president until January 2029 and continues to hold considerable influence over America's international decisions. His administration can still negotiate agreements, influence regional diplomacy and make important foreign policy decisions. However, Democratic control of Congress could make legislation and government spending more difficult to advance. Middle Eastern governments may also begin preparing for a possible change in US priorities after Trump's presidency ends. His remaining time in office could therefore prove important for the region's political and diplomatic future.
