Two Men Charged Over Suspected Plot Against US-Run RAF Fairford Airbase

Two men have been charged with national security offences in Britain following an investigation into a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford, a US-operated military airbase in western England. The Crown Prosecution Service announced the charges on October 27, 2026, as investigators continued examining the incident. The suspects, both aged 24, are Mohmed Abdulkarim, a British-Iranian dual national, and British citizen Nouman Essghir. Their case comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding military facilities in the country.

What Charges Do the Two Suspects Face?

Prosecutors said Abdulkarim has been charged with allegedly assisting Iran’s intelligence service, while Essghir faces a charge relating to entering a prohibited location for a purpose considered harmful to UK interests. Both charges fall under Britain’s National Security Act. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the suspects are entitled to due process. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances and potential motives behind the suspected operation.

Security Alert Triggered Evacuations Near RAF Fairford

The incident began on September 27, when Essghir was arrested near the airbase after authorities responded to reports of suspicious vehicles. Armed police and bomb-disposal specialists searched the area, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents. Investigators later reported finding petrol, an accelerant, in vehicles at the scene, but no explosives were found. Abdulkarim was arrested more recently, while several other men have also been detained and released on bail as enquiries continue.

Iran Denies Involvement as UK Investigation Continues

British authorities have raised concerns about possible Iranian state involvement in the incident, which led the United States to withdraw bombers from RAF Fairford. UK officials have described the investigation as complex and said they are examining the extent of any external direction. Iran has denied responsibility. RAF Fairford, located in Gloucestershire, has been used by US aircraft during military operations against Iran this year. The case has intensified debate about security threats facing British military sites and the protection of strategic facilities.
