Williamson makes his wait worth it for Sunrisers

Beware the wrath of a patient man! Having warmed the benches so far, Kane Stuart Williamson had a few scores to settle in his opening outing (incidentally his 100th in the format) of the Vivo-Indian Premier League.

The New Zealander chose to vent his ire on a hapless Delhi Daredevils attack, to the detriment of the tourists and the delight of Sunrisers Hyderabad fans at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium on Wednesday night.

Turbo-charged by Williams’ 51-ball 89, the host piled up an imposing 191 for four and terminated the Daredevils’ chase 15 short of target. Hampering the advance of the visitors was some precision-driven bowling at the death by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Siddharth Kaul, which curtailed the big-hitting Shreyas Iyer and Angelo Mathews.

David Warner called right and went for first strike. Wanting to work across Morris’ climbing ball from outside off, the Sunrisers’ skipper edged to his end instead. The ballooning ball gave Amit Mishra enough time to come in from fine leg and accept the catch. If that blow was big, Shikhar Dhawan and Williamson didn’t let it show, quick to move on from the reversal and rebuild the innings.

Waiting in the wings had only made Williamson keen to step up, the Tauranga-native hoisting Mathews high into the galleries over cow-corner and long-off off successive deliveries. Then the calm Kiwi carted Pat Cummins’ steepler over the mid-wicket hoardings. The Aussie speedster pumped up the pace, plied Yorkers aplenty and even a full toss, which Kane caned for a six.

If Mishra was meant to slam the brakes on Williamson’s carnage, the wily leggie could do little to contain it. Williamson fell when he hit against the pace of Morris, holing out to Shreyas at deep mid-wicket. Dhawan, a shade sidelined in the strike-rate stakes, propped up the charge, helping himself to a six en route to a 50-ball 70.

Dhawan departed, pulling Morris to deep mid-wicket Mathews. Yuvraj Singh was castled by the South African off the next ball. The Pretorian packed more than a punch, enjoying the distinction of claiming all the four Sunrisers wickets that fell.

For Daredevils, Sanju Samson, with a 33-ball 42 laced with three boundaries and two maximums, had forged a forceful response. So did Shreyas with an unconquered 50 to throw a mighty scare in the Sunrisers’ camp.
