Qatar 2022 stadium projects reach major milestone, completes 150 million man hours

The next edition of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar may still be four years away, but the country is gearing up for it in right earnest.

Construction of most of the stadiums that will be used for the tournament are well underway. The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy recently reached a milestone when it passed 150 million man hours across all sites, with 116 million of it coming on stadium construction sites alone, said a report on the SC Website.

The milestone came about due to the strong collaboration between SC and its various stakeholders, said SC’s Technical Delivery Office Vice Chairman Yasir Al Jamal.

“Major progress continues to be made across our stadium sites — and this is credit to not only the work of the SC, but also our various stakeholders, contractors and sub-contractors,” Al Jamal was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.

“From day one, we’ve committed to strong collaboration with all our partners — particularly in relation to the health and safety of our workers. Reaching 150 million man hours is a notable landmark as we continue our journey towards 2022,” he added.

Khalifa Stadium was the first of the 2022 World Cup venues to be completed, in May 2017. Since then, work on the other seven stadiums have been progressing as per schedule.

More than 30,000 people are currently working on 2022 World Cup projects, with 26,000 directly involved in the construction of proposed Qatar 2022 stadiums, reported The Peninsula.

The SC has taken the safety of its workers seriously. While more than 90,000 people have undertaken site safety inductions, the SC’s Health and Safety Assurance Division has overseen 1,800 site safety visits.

The SC has also been organising monthly safety health and environment leadership team meetings with key stakeholders, including Ministry of Labour, Ashghal and Qatar Rail, according to Qatar Tribune.
