Filipina warns UAE expats against online phone scams

As online prize scams dupe residents, Abu Dhabi Police has launched an social media campaign to raise awareness about such scams through real life accounts told by residents.

In a series of videos - using personal accounts - the Abu Dhabi Police urges people to not believe or respond to any spam messages, links or fake ads claiming to offer cash prizes, highlighting that such fake messages are a way to lure people into sharing their bank account details and steal money from them.

In a recent video posted by the Abu Dhabi Police, an online phone scam victim, a Filipina, said that she had received a call from persons who asked for her bank details, including the card number and PIN code.

The woman later discovered that Dh4,000 had been deducted from her account for purchases.

She reported the matter to the police, who told her to enquire from the bank before the police could open an investigation.

The woman advised people in UAE not to share bank account details with anyone.
