The White House press office could not be reached late Monday.
Trump explained the unusual role in a statement sent to Politico.
"I will continue to offer my father my candid advice and counsel, as I have for my entire life,” she said. “While there is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president, I will voluntarily follow all of the ethics rules placed on government employees."
The public has questioned Trump's role in the administration. She has been present at high-level meetings and in January, she announced she and her husband, Jared Kushner, would move to Washington. She has also attended meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Trump stepped down from her role as head of her fashion and jewelry company when her father took office.
"Having an adult child of the president who is actively engaged in the work of the administration is new ground,” Gorelick told Politico. “Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not.”
