The Vir Chakra Recipient Transitions To Regional Aviation

Former Indian Air Force Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman has officially moved into commercial aviation. The famous pilot took premature retirement from the military after 22 years of service. He recently joined the Goa-based regional carrier FLY91 as a commercial pilot. Varthaman joined the airline in August. He became an international household name following an aerial confrontation between India and Pakistan in 2019.

A Highly Decorated Military Career

Varthaman has not publicly commented on his new commercial role. A spokesperson for FLY91 declined to provide specific details regarding his employment. The airline simply stated that employee information remains private. FLY91 began its commercial operations in March 2024. The airline primarily operates ATR 72-600 aircraft and maintains bases in Goa and Hyderabad. Varthaman earned the Vir Chakra for his actions during the 2019 border conflict. India carried out air strikes near Balakot following a suicide bombing in Pulwama. Pakistan retaliated, leading to a direct aerial engagement.

The 2019 Aerial Confrontation

During the conflict, Varthaman flew a MiG-21 Bison for the IAF’s 51 Squadron. Pakistani forces shot down his aircraft, forcing him to eject. Enemy forces took him into custody immediately after he landed. Pakistan held Varthaman for two days before releasing him at the Wagah border. He returned to India on March 1, 2019, as a national hero. The military subsequently promoted him to the rank of Group Captain. His transition to FLY91 marks a major shift in his career.
