Panchkula: Death Toll Reaches 30 In Dera Violence

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted of rape this Friday at the CBI court in Panchkula, which led to a massive riot by his supporters around the 2 kilometers radius of the court. The violence during this riot has resulted in 30 deaths by the hands of armed forces during a police-public clash. 24 bodies were found near the 2-kilometer radius of the court, while the other 6 bodies were located near sector 2 and 21 residential areas.

The police have detained people in the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, 200 meters from NH-22 and considered it as a designated “jail” by the state government. The vicinity of the stadium saw the maximum damage. An angry mob had vandalized Hotel Holiday Inn and Gymkhana Club at Sector 3, however, the police was on the spot to take action. The armed forces resorted to the use of tear gas to tame the situation but soon the police had to open fire.

The enraged mob went ahead and vandalized the HAFED building at Sector 5 and even set fire to media vehicles. Government buildings and infrastructure in the area were also destroyed. The armed forces started with tear gas and again had to resort to gunfire to control the situation which led to deaths in the area. Ambulances carried the bodies lying on the roadsides, however, more than 10 people were declared dead on arrival at the Civil Hospital.

The police and paramilitary forces were trying to control the agitated mob, who turned to the residential area of sector 2 and 4. The situation was extremely violent and the armed forces once again opened fire. 3 were reported dead at Sector 2 in police gunfire. Shockingly, a body was found at Sector 21 as well where no police gunfire had taken place.

Earlier on Saturday, forensics department had collected evidence from the various locations. According to an anonymous staff member of Holiday Inn reported that 3 bodies, including a woman and a young boy, were found in the bushes near the hotel, and another 6 bodies were discovered near the Zirakpur-Panchkula highway at Sector 3.
